Human Nature by Benedict de Spinoza

This paper consists of more parts. Firstly, it includes a theoretical introduction on Spinoza's concept of substance, substantial attributes and modes of extension and thought. The theoretical introduction serves as a background for the following examination of human nature in Spinoza's Ethics. In the chapters concerning human nature, which are introduced by chapters on intellect, imagination, memory and three different kinds of knowledge, our idea of "double nature" is presented. This characteristic of nature is deductible from the concept of adequate and inadequate knowledge and it becomes a presupposition for our further interpretation, which deals with the problem of parallelism/dualism of modes of extension and thought. This topic is treated in part V of Ethics where also the question of destruction of human body and the eternal part of mind is discussed.

Modal/temporal functions of paradigm hablaba in contemporary Spanish

The aim of this thesis is to introduce modotemporal functions of paradigm hablaba in Spanish. In the theoretical part, we define basic concepts related to this theme and the basic functions of paradigm hablaba. Then we describe functions that are less typical for the given paradigm. We designate these functions as modal meanings and we pay most attention to them. We describe them mainly from the semantic point of view and we also introduce different kinds of theories, which try to explain these meanings. In the practical part, using parallel corpus InterCorp, we analyze the meanings of the paradigm hablaba in the selected occurrences and we introduce the examples of some sentences proving the statements from the theoretical part of the thesis. Spanish verb grammatical constructions where the verb changes its meaning depending on the choice of mood in the subordinate clause

The present work deals with the spanish grammatical constructions with the verbs that admit both the verb in the indicative and the subjunctive in the subordinate clause and whose meaning varies depending on the selected mood in the subordinate clause. The subject of our research are the verbs insistir (en), decir, temer, temerse, sentir, esperar, hacer and parecer. By the parallel language corpus InterCorp we analyse what are the trends in the use of the above verbs in the indicative and subjunctive and we study the influence of this modal opposition how it is reflected in the czech translation. Dana Kratochvílová Spanish Modality from the Point of View of Relationships among Modal Meanings (dissertation) Abstract: The present work deals with the so-called grey areas that can be found within the Spanish modal system. In these areas, two different types of modality (modal meanings) can occur. We study the relationship that can be found between potentiality and reality, potentiality and evaluation, evaluation and volition, volition and question, question and potentiality, potentiality and volition. The use of mood in concessive clauses in modern Spanish

Concessive sentences in Spanish are associated with different moods depending on the degree of certainty with respect to the speaker's testimony. Frequent types of the concessive sentences are those with the conjunction aunque and structures introduced by the preposition por. Individual types have the same general rules for the choice of indicative and subjunctive mood, but both types have different use of these moods. In this paper we first follow the standard rules of the choice of moods in the concessive sentences and then they are compared with the Spanish linguistic corpus CREA and with the parallel Spanish-Czech corpus InterCorp.

in English Choice of Mood in Spanish Grammatical Constructions Expressing Potentiality (with Reference to Czech and Italian) Key words: Mood, Subjunctive, Potentiality, Corpus, Spanish, Italian, Czech The objective of this paper is to study the systemic possibilities of alternation between the subjunctive and the indicative in Spanish grammatical constructions expressing potentiality, the semantical differences this alternation brings and also the frequency these two modes appear in respective constructions. In order to achieve this objective I studied not only the specialized literature in the topic but also the language corpora. Later I compared the situation in Spanish with Italian and Czech as well. The results of my study brought me to the conclusion that it is necessary to study each expression of potentiality separately because the verbal modes do not appear equally often after these expressions. On the other hand, the use of the conjunctive in Italian is far more formalized. Czech does not posses any systemic tool that could work for the Spanish subjunctive in every context. However, its translation as the conditional or the future indicative is possible.
